This peaceful backwater is immediately next to the rushing waters of Benson weir on the River Thames in Oxfordshire. This was photographed in late August and the lush green foliage rather belies the hot, dry weather we had experienced durung the summer! The image was taken from the Thames Path which, if coming from Wallingford, has just passed over the lock and weir at Benson. Carrying on to the left we reach a riverside cafe and bistro - just right for refreshments before the return walk!

A white painted house on the banks of the River Thames at Mill End, Hambleden in Buckinghamshire. This lovely stretch of the river is where the Chiltern Hills meet the Thames Valley and unsuprisingly is the setting for many TV programmes and a number of films. This image was captured from Hambledon Weir, the longest on the river. Nearby is the iconic Hambleden Mill, now luxury flats. A digital drawing from my original photograph.

The Dartford crossing of the River Thames

The 316 foot high Clock Tower is the world's largest four-faced, chiming clock. The structure completed between 1858-59 is situated at the north-eastern end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. It is often colloquially referred to as Big Ben, which is actually the nickname of the main bell housed within the tower (formally known as the Great Bell). The bell weighing over 13 tons, was cast in 1858 at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in East London. To this day one of the largest bells they have ever cast. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry also cast the Liberty Bell, along with hand bells, tower bells, clock bells, carillons, and turret bells for all over the world. An old Oxford college barge hiding in a backwater of the River Thames between Oxford and Iffley. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid 1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.

More accurately, at that point, considering the many bends in the river, it is technically the West bank. A panoramic view of the North Bank of the River Thames as it runs through London, England, including the Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament) and Westminster Bridge, taken from the Riverside Walk near the London Eye. The inn dates from 1728 and is of course a listed building. Here it is in glorious technicolour! Date: 4th August 2020.

An old brick bridge taking the towpath over a stream at Cookham, Berkshire. It's certainly seen better days but the Thames Path skirts it so you don't have to walk over it! The Thames Path is a long-distance trail which follows the river all the way from Cricklade in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, London. Cookham, on the banks of the Thames is a village lying in the furthest north-east corner of Berkshire, England. Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and painted.

Halfpenny Bridge and its old tollhouse as seen from the Thames Path at Lechlade in Gloucestershire. This bridge dates from 1792 and marks the start (or finish) of the navigable Thames. Pass through this arch en route upriver and it soon becomes narrower and shallower - no place for river boats! The bridge's name stems from the ha'penny toll paid by pedestrians to cross - this ending in 1839. Lechlade is a picturesque market town at the southern tip of the Cotswolds near the Oxfordshire border.

Goring Lock on the River Thames on a sunny October day. There has been a lock here since the 1500s when it was a flash lock, In the 1700s it was redesigned as a pound lock and was constructed of timber, The present lock dates from the 1920s. Goring-on-Thames is a picturesque village in Oxfordshire and is a haunt of artists (and photographers!). Here the river narrows to pass between the North Wessex Downs and the Chiltern Hills at the point known as the Goring Gap.

At this point the river is properly called The Isis and as you walk along the Thames Path from here to Oxford you pass the Oxford University's college boathouses. The village of Iffley itself is a conservation area, its narrow streets leading down to the river where you cross the weir to reach the lock.

A pair of narrowboats heading upstream on the Thames and passing through Boulters Lock in Maidenhead, Berkshire.This historic lock was originally calles Ray Mill Lock after the watermill next door (now a restaurant), the first lock keeper being the miller's son John. The lock is probably best known through the painting 'Boulters Lock Sunday Afternoon' by Edward Joihn Gregory (1895) showing a mass of skiffs and punts heading into the lock chamber.

A mudlark is someone who scavenges in river mud for items of value, a term used especially to describe those who scavenged this way in London during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Seen from the Thames path between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames, the church of All Saints in the riverside village of Bisham in Berkshire, just upstream of the National Sports Centre. The Grade 2 listed church dates from the 12th century, the oldest remaining part being the tower.

The new foot and cycle bridge over the River Thames at Reading in Berkshire, England, just upstream from the busy road crossing at Reading Bridge. The footbridge, named Christchurch Bridge as the result of a poll, links Caversham to the north with Reading and in particular the station on the south bank. After heavy rain, the Thames rushing through Day's Weir near Little Wittenham, Oxfordshire. The Thames Path crosses the river over the lock and weir, carrying on upstream towards Abingdon. Apparently the name for Day's Lock and Weir comes from that of a local Catholic yeoman in the 17th century.

The view looking eastwards from Pangbourne in Berkshire, England, towards the Whitchurch toll bridge captured on a late summer afternoon. The toll bridge, one of only two remaining on the Thames joins Pangbourne in Berkshire with Whitchurch on Thames in Oxfordshire. There has been a bridge here since 1792, the present iron one, constructed in 1902 being the third. The author Kenneth Graham lived at Pangbourne, the river being immortalised in his book 'The Wind In The Willows'.

Looking over the River Thames at Abingdon in Oxfordshire to the parish church of St Mary. Dating from the early C12th, it is notable for being the second widest church in England - having five aisles! Abingdon-on-Thames is a lovely ancient market town which although now in Oxfordshire was once the county town of Berkshire! From her the Thames makes its majestic way to Wallingford and from there to Reading before reaching London and ultimately the North Sea. This is a digital art image.
