Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns. A full plaid is a long piece of tartan fabric, traditionally worn as part of a highland dress. It usually matches the tartan of the kilt. A full plaid is pleated the whole way, with half of its length sewn shut (so that the pleats cannot open). Its length is almost twice the height of the wearer (about twice the distance from the ground to the wearer's shoulder). Plaids are any crisscross patterns of two or more colors. Tartans are plaids with a name to identify a community or family. Checks are plaids with a regular pattern, usually of only two colors. Plaid sometimes describes the crisscross pattern of tartans or similar.

Unlike the best known three glaciers in New Zealand, the Rob Roy glacier requires a bit more effort. Drive from Wanaka about 35 km to the end of the Mt Aspiring road. On the way there are hazards such fording nine creeks, fortunately fairly shallow, and being a farming valley, sheep and cattle on the road. You just have to be patient as the sheep and cattle dogs drive them along. It is a 10 km return walk to the glacier, and yes, the 5 km is mostly uphill! There are warning signs of possible avalanches in the last km, but it looked safe on the day. This glacier is not in a steep valley so is less subject to rock avalanches and this means it is mostly pure ice. The B&W photo is better than the colour version. 21 August, 2015 Canon...
