Just to the south of Dunfermline's High Street lies one of Scotland's most unusual churches. The Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland is two very distinct churches, joined in the middle. The effect is unexpected but attractive. The Abbey Church, as the name suggests, was the church serving Dunfermline Abbey. A church probably already existed on this site in 1070, when King Malcolm III married Queen Margaret. Margaret liked Dunfermline so much she set up a Benedictine foundation here. This was later transformed by her son King David I into what was intended to become the most important abbey in Scotland. Work was started in 1128 on the Abbey Church and the nave still survives as the western half of the building on view today.

Situated 9 miles south east of Oxford and less than a mile from the River Thames, Dorchester is a small village of just over 1000 inhabitants, with a great Abbey and was once an important Roman town. The Abbey you see today was begun in the 12th century and is essentially Norman in construction, though the building replaced two earlier Saxon cathedrals and there is evidence of Christian activity in and around Dorchester dating back to the 7th century. Whitby Marina And Harbor And Abbey And Church On the way in to Whitby we always cross a bridge some way out but as you look over the edge, this is the view. I had to park quite a way from the bridge to be safe and walk back down to take this vista of Whitby. Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts. By Paul Thompson Photography

Whitby Abbey And Graveyard Of St Mary's Church A recent trip to the East Yorkshire coast would have been incomplete without a visit to Whitby. This fishing town has it all, a fantastic town and harbour, lots of shops and 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey And Graveyard Of St Mary's Church. Did I mention the links to Dracula? The sky was amazing and the gravestones gave a great foreground interest to this timeless landscape at the top of the cliff. Whitby Whale Bones Arch Framing Whitby Abbey And Church The iconic whale bones that give us photographers a natural frame to place the Abbey on the opposite cliff across the harbour. To recognise this tradition and the town's important whaling history, a whale bone arch was erected on Whitby's West Cliff in 1853. The archway frames a view of the town's quaint cottages and cobbled streets as well as the ruins of the medieval Whitby Abbey, located across the bay on the East Cliff. The Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul in the village of Dorchester-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. It is also the village's parish church. This beautiful old church has a long history, originally dating back to AD635. However, the Abbey itself was founded in 1140, built by an Order of Augustinian Canons. Its medieval heritage is seen inside - particularly by an effigy of a knight. A Jesse window's stone tracery depicts the stem of Jesse and is a feature of the building.

The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. There had apparently been a place of worship here fron the C7th but it was a Norman, Robert FitzHarmon who founded this abbey. Building started in 1102 and it was consecrated in 1121, housing a community of Benedictine monks.After the Dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII it became the parish church.
