Brighton Pier

Brighton's West Pier. The pier was opened in 1866 and was the first pier to be Grade 1 listed in England and Wales but is now derelict. The pier closed to the public in 1975 and gradually fell in to disrepair and was ravaged by two separate fires in March & May 2003, both thought to be arson.

All that remains of the West Pier in Brighton. Brighton's West Pier was closed to the public in 1975. Sadly a huge storm in 2002 and two arson attacks in 2003 reduced it to ruins and it has gradually been re-claimed by the sea ever since. It still casts an eerie beauty on the seafront though.

The sun setting over the remains of Brighton's iconic West Pier. Built in Victorian times to allow the populace to enjoy bracing fresh sea air by walking over the sea, it has suffered gradual destruction since the mid 1900s and was finally closed to the public in 1975. In 2003 a fire destroyed the main structure, the elements continuing the work leaving these skeletal remains!

On 28th March the Pavilion was destroyed in an arson attack, and then on 11th May the Concert Hall, already seriously damaged in a huge storm the previous December, was also deliberately set on fire. It will be a sad day when the West Pier is finally claimed by the sea. In the meantime, it was a beautiful sunny day when I sat on the beach to take this and there were hardly any people around....bliss!

The burnt-out ruin of The West Pier, Brighton, England, taken at sunset time, with the reflection of the structure in a calm sea. It was built in 1866. On 28 March 2003 the pavilion at the end of the pier caught fire. Firefighters were unable to save the building from destruction because the collapsed walkway prevented them from reaching it. The cause of the fire remains unknown. On 11 May 2003, another fire broke out, consuming most of what was left of the concert hall. The Fire re-ignited on 12 May. Arson was suspected: the West Pier Trust refers to the fires as the work of "professional arsonists".
