The sun setting over the remains of Brighton's iconic West Pier. Built in Victorian times to allow the populace to enjoy bracing fresh sea air by walking over the sea, it has suffered gradual destruction since the mid 1900s and was finally closed to the public in 1975. In 2003 a fire destroyed the main structure, the elements continuing the work leaving these skeletal remains!

Just because I love Brighton so much!

I was so lucky to be in the right place at the right time - and who doesn't love visiting Brighton!

The burnt-out ruin of The West Pier, Brighton, England, taken at sunset time, with the reflection of the structure in a calm sea. It was built in 1866. On 28 March 2003 the pavilion at the end of the pier caught fire. Firefighters were unable to save the building from destruction because the collapsed walkway prevented them from reaching it. The cause of the fire remains unknown. On 11 May 2003, another fire broke out, consuming most of what was left of the concert hall. The Fire re-ignited on 12 May. Arson was suspected: the West Pier Trust refers to the fires as the work of "professional arsonists". The Galloping Horses Carousel On Brighton Pier Back-lit by a Glorious Sunset.

Brighton at sunset and the starlings gather in huge numbers. 'Smaller than blackbirds, with a short tail, pointed head, triangular wings, starlings look black at a distance but when seen closer they are very glossy with a sheen of purples and greens. Their flight is fast and direct and they walk and run confidently on the ground. Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds, its decline elsewhere makes it a Red List species.' RSPB website
