Chepstow Castle in Monmouthshire, Wales, standing above a crossing point on the River Wye, is one of the oldest castles in Britain and it boasts the oldest doors in Europe! Building began in 1067 under William Fitz Osbern, forming the southernmost in a chain of castles guarding the Welsh Marches. It was later used in the conquest of Gwent in the 12th century. It was begun in 1067 by William the Conqueror who saw the strategic importance of placing a castle here at a major crossing point on the river. It continued to be built and improved over the medieval period and finally saw action during the Civil War when it was held by Royalist Monmouthshire against Parliamentarian Gloucestershire who finally captured it in 1648.
