The Groyne

Neptune's Lampshade Number of views as of 18th March 2017 = 340. A groyne marker on the beach at Canford Cliffs, between Poole and Bournemouth (Dorset, England). Stone or wooden groynes are placed at regular intervals along the coastline here to interrupt the water flow and prevent excessive movement of sand, basically to stop the beach being washed away by the tides. At high tide, the groynes are normally submerged and markers are placed like this one to mark the ends of the structure. It's quite unusual for the tide to be so far out as to reveal the whole of the marker. Date: 29th September 2012.

This image was taken just after sunrise on a bright December morning from Blyth beach in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. The bright sunshine illuminated the groyne and the rough seas were crashing against the wooden structure as a lone seagull perched on the marker post.

Groynes like these are typical of many beaches on the North Sea and Baltic Sea. They serve to protect the coast and prevent the sand from being washed away.

Spurn Point Lighthouse And Groynes The current Spurn Point Lighthouse was established in 1895. After it was decommissioned in 1985, the lighthouse lay derelict for a number of years until it was restored in 2016. Guided tours are available through the Spurn Discovery Centre, which the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust runs. The centre also has on display a section of the former optic from the lighthouse. The current tower replaced the previous old High Lighthouse. It was originally surrounded by accommodation, but the foundations are now overgrown and barely visible. Worn Groyne At Sandsend Beach, Yorkshire, UK I really liked the erosion on this Groyne so I just had to take this photograph. A groyne is a rigid hydraulic structure built perpendicularly from an ocean shore or a river bank, interrupting water flow and limiting the movement of sediment. Groynes are examples of hard coastal protection structures which aim to protect the shoreline from coastal erosion. A more detailed treatment of the effects of groynes is given in Groynes as shore protection. You’ll find Sandsend is another village of which the Cleveland Way passes through, a great trail to walk if you fancy a trip to the neighbouring town of Whitby or Runswick Bay village.
