Why is this bloke adding yet another photo of that scary rock you might ask ? This image shows, better than the rest, the gap between the cliff & the Rock. You might also notice that anyone jumping onto the Rock lands on sloping ground which from closer view is fairly gravely .. not solid rock. Despite this, on my 4 trips to the Rock so far, I have seen people jump over on 3 occasions. I must admit that the odd time was when I came home with my nerves more intact. Actually, when you are standing near the gap, you don't see the great drop & it is fairly wide at that section. Despite this, I could feel my heart pumping loudly as the thought of jumping entered my mind ... I sometimes listen to my heart !! This is Hanging Rock...

Following on from the popular view of this site, I thought I'd add a closer view of this amazing rock & the two fearless people who casually wandered to the edge while I hit some incredulous state of mind. "Tory's Den", a cave that was purportedly used by Tories during the American Revolution. Hanging Rock State Park, Stokes County NC. In February of 1781, a Loyalist group went into the house of a farmer named Blackburn and robbed him of everything, including his clothes. Mr. Blackburn went to Town Fork, where Lt. Col. Joseph Winston lived. Lt. Col. Winston gave him a pair of pants as Mr. Blackburn told his story, then Lt. Col. Winston sent out a runner to call out part of the Surry County Regiment of Militia. Within a few hours he was able to gather up fifteen men and they went after the Loyalists. Lt. Col. Winston learned of their whereabouts by hanging a boy who had carried bread to them. Yes, it scares me too !! Looking through photos of my favourite Aussie landmark in the Blue Mountains, this one made me feel for a moment that I was in mid air. I was probably a few feet from the edge & reasonably safe but the angle makes it look otherwise. That's why I took it from this angle with the tree partially in the way.
