Phineas Gage's head injury. This lithograph, published in 1850, shows the head injury to Phineas Gage (1823-1860) that led to important advances in understanding how the human brain works. Gage was working on the construction of a railway in Vermont, USA, when, on 13 September 1848, an accident with an explosive charge sent a tamping iron (1 metre long and 3.2 centimetres wide) into his head. It passed under his left cheekbone, through the left frontal lobe of his brain, and out through the top of his head. Gage initially appeared to make a full recovery, but it was later reported that his personality had been changed by the accident. Artwork from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences.

Jamaican Born American organizer Marcus Garvey built the largest mass movement in Black History. He created the first of its kind Black Star Line - a group of steamships that provided logistical support for a global growing Buy Black Movement.

D-Day landings. US Coast Guard-manned LCVP disembarking troops on the morning of 6 June 1944 at Omaha Beach in one of the first waves of the D-Day landings. The unit was Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Omaha Beach saw the fiercest fighting, and this photograph became an iconic image ('Into the Jaws of Death'). The D-Day landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history. They successfully liberated the Normandy coast of Nazi-occupied France, contributing to the Allied victory in World War II. During the landings, the Allied force of some 156,000 (from the UK, USA and Canada) took some 12,000 casualties and suffered more than 4000 dead.

The discovery photograph of the positron, the positive version of the electron & the first antimatter particle to be discovered. The cloud chamber photo was taken in 1932 by US physicist Carl Anderson. It shows the track of a positive particle that enters the chamber from below. The particle is known to be positive because of the way it bends in the chamber's magnetic field; & it is proved to be moving up the picture because it loses energy & curves more in the magnetic field after traversing the 6 mm thick lead plate in the middle. But the track is too faint to be caused by a proton; it was exactly like an electron's track; it had to be the predicted positron.

X-ray of heart arteries (1904). Early arteriogram showing in fine detail the coronary arteries of the heart. The X-ray was made by Alfred G. Fryatt of Australia and published in the Archives of the Roentgen Ray (1904). The heart of a cadaver was used, and injected with what is assumed to have been mercury. At upper left, the left coronary artery branches to supply blood to the muscle of the left ventricle of the heart. At upper right is the curved right coronary artery, feeding the right side of the heart. Arteriography is used today as an important technique to diagnose coronary artery disease.

Chandler’s Wharf, also known as the Calder-Thorpe Warehouse, was built in 1884. This vernacular style warehouse was built for Phila Lazarus Calder (1806-1888), who inherited the property from her father, Aaron Lazarus (1771-1841). The property remained in the Lazarus family until its purchase in 1910 by W. B. Thorpe & Company, dealers in coal, wood, and builder’s supplies, which used it and the adjacent Rankin & Martin warehouse until 1943. In 1978, the two warehouses were rehabilitated into the eclectic collection of shops, galleries, and offices that it is today. is a shopping complex in a renovated 19th Century river wharf building. Astronaut footprint on the Moon. Computer artwork recreating a photograph of boot imprints left by astronauts on the Moon. A total of twelve US astronauts have walked on the Moon as part of NASA's Apollo missions. Neil Armstrong was the first, in 1969, and Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan were the last, in 1972. There are plans to return to the Moon by 2020.

The Moores Creek Battlefield can only be seen on foot along the 1-mile long History Trail. Much of the path is paved with a rubbery material like that you find on a children’s playground, so it makes walking easy on the knees. Currie, North Carolina USA. "The Triumph of Death", 15th century fresco. This fresco hung in the Palazzo Scalfani in Palermo, Italy. The building became a civic hospital in 1435, and shortly after this fresco was painted. Between the 14th and 17th centuries bubonic plague, or black death, was epidemic throughout Europe, killing almost a third of its population. It is caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis, which is transmitted by the rat flea.
