St Mary's Lane in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, with its ancient brick and half timbered houses overhanging the street. Tewkesbury is a beautiful mkedieval town, many of its buildings giving a strong clue as to its age. It was sited at the point where the rivers Severn and Avon meet - a natural and formidable moat! Near this image is the Abbey - in the middle ages the spiritual and commercial centre of the town. In 1471, the Battle of Tewkesbury was a decisive point in the Wars of the Roses. The church of St Mary the Virgin on the edge of the village of Aldworth in West Berkshire. Parts of it date back to c.1200. Inside are the 'Aldworth Giants' - effigies on the tombs of the De La Beche family dating from medieval times. They are supposedly life size - but some of the knights are over 7ft! Many of these were damaged by Parliamentary troops during the Civil War. The village of Aldworth sits above the Thames Valley on the Berkshire Downs. The image is finished as a pastel painting.

This little fountain is situated below the medieval city walls of Granada next to old cave dwellings in the traditional gypsy quarter, Sacromonte. I liked the composition for this watercolour with the cobbled street, Calle Vereda de Enmedio, curving around the corner, the attractive houses to the left and, of course the fountain and old city walls.
