Nerve cell culture. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of new growth from a cultured sample from a spinal cord. The numerous branching strands are neurites, processes growing out of the nerve cell body (not seen). These connect to other neurites from other nerve cells, forming a network of nervous tissue. A neurite is either an axon or a dendrite, the former transmitting nerve impulses away from the nerve cell body, while the latter transmits nerve impulses towards the nerve cell body. Research into curing spinal paralysis, uses nerve tissue cultures to investigate methods of promoting neurite growth and neural regeneration. Magnification unknown.

Neural progenitor cell differentiation. Fluorescence light micrograph of neural progenitor cells that have been grown in a medium that is selective for astrocytes for three weeks. Neural progenitor cells are able to differentiate into neurons (nerve cells) or support cells (glial cells), which include astrocytes. Astrocytes have been stained orange and neural progenitor cells green. Cell nuclei are blue. Neural progenitor cells are a potential source of cells to replace damaged or lost brain cells.

The light-detecting part is formed of rod and cone photoreceptor cells. The lower third of this image contains the blood vessels and nerves that form the upper layer. The light entering the eyes has to penetrate through this layer to reach the tightly packed photosensitive 'outer segments' of the photoreceptors (top third of image) which lie just below a layer of retinal pigment epithelium cells (top). The hippocampus is a structure of the limbic system of the brain. There is a hippocampus in each cerebral hemisphere, and they are thought to be responsible for spatial awareness and the formation of memories. Different structures have been stained different colours: the nuclei of cells are orange and neurofilaments are blue. Neurofilaments are proteins found in the axons (output processes) of nerve cells.

Neurons are (also known as nerve cells) are cells of the nervous system that are specialized to carry messages through an electrochemical process. They have special cells called astrocytes (also known as astroglia) that are a type of neuroglial cell that provides support functions in the central nervous tissue and spinal cord. This pattern reflects the capacity of the whole nerve bundle to be somewhat flexible and deformable and turn in its course through the supporting connective tissue (epineurium, stained blue). Nuclei associated with the nerve fibres are Schwann cells and fibroblasts. Magnification: x83 when printed at 10 centimetres across.

Brain synapses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through brain tissue showing a number of synapses. A synapse is a junction between two nerve cells. At a synapse an electrical signal is transmitted from one cell to the next in only one direction. When the signal reaches a synapse it triggers the release of neurotransmitter chemicals from synaptic vesicles (red) at the end of the presynaptic cell. The neurotransmitters cross a microscopic gap and bind to receptors on the post-synaptic cell, triggering an impulse in that cell. Magnification: 30,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.

Nerve cells. Light micrograph of nerve cells (neurones) from the cerebral cortex of the brain. These cells are from the hippocampus, part of the cerebral cortex concerned with memory. The hippocampus is rich in pyramidal cells such as these, which have numerous dendrites (right) trailing from one end of their cell body (dark areas) and one axon projecting from the other (left). Dendrites form junctions communicating with other cells, and signals are then relayed through the cell's axon.

Nerve synapse. Computer artwork of a junction, or synapse, between two nerve cells (neurons, blue). As the electrical signal reaches the presynaptic end of a neuron it triggers the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin across the gap, or synaptic cleft, between the two cells. The neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, changing the membrane's excitability and triggering an electrical impulse. Each neuron consists of a central cell body with many dendrites branching from it.

The cell at right is infected with prions and has been treated with a PERK inhibitor drug (yellow). Prions are abnormal proteins that cause a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases including BSE in cows and CJD in humans. Abnormal infectious prions directly change normal prions found in the brain to the abnormal form and prevent the synthesis of essential proteins. This leads to neuronal death. PERK inhibitors allow normal protein synthesis to continue, preventing neurodegeneration. Such drugs also have the potential to treat Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Glial cells, or neuroglia, are non-neural cells of the central nervous system (CNS, brain and spinal cord). They are the predominant cell type in brain tissue and are thought to outnumber neurons by 10 to 1. Their precise roles remain to be well understood. Glial cells provide physical and functional support to neurons and participate in maintenance of the blood-brain barrier by attachments to blood vessels (as seen here).
