I decided to make this photograph to better illustrate the need for a more accurate balance in nature to be created and used this particular plant - deemed a weed as 'classic example' The great Ansel Adams... For this years 'Summer in The Sun" photo competition, I wanted something striking, colourful and bright which depicted a highly relevant less bright *conservation topic right now...* and that of course, for me boiled down to the often overlooked humble bumble bee! Continued use of a systemic agricultural pesticide resembling 'nicotine' called 'neonicotinoids' or 'neonics' for short - are harming our bumble bee and honey bee populations and as a result, such loss of the pollinators, in whatever shape and form will have a catastrophic effect on our British 'country file' ecosystem and the food upon which we depend upon! Bees are found on every continent except Antarctica ~ in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants. Native pollinators include bumblebees and solitary bees, which often survive in refuges in wild areas away from agricultural spraying, but may still be poisoned in massive spray programs for mosquitoes, gypsy moths, or other insect pests. Although pesticide use remains a concern, the major problem for wild pollinator populations is the loss of the flower-rich habitat on which they depend for food.
