This design is based upon the urban legend of the Polybius arcade game. The story tells of a new video game appearing in arcades throughout Oregon in 1981, and caused controversy. So called men in black, were seen collecting data from the machines, and players allegedly suffered from awful side effects, including night terrors and hallucinations. A month later, the arcade machines disappeared, and the story entered legend.

Polybius is a fictitious 1981 arcade game that originated from an urban legend created in 2000. The original game's actual existence has never been authoritatively proven.

Polybius is an urban legend concerning a fictitious 1981 arcade game. The legend describes the game as part of a government-run crowdsourced psychology experiment based in Portland, Oregon. Gameplay supposedly produced intense psychoactive and addictive effects in the player.

Polybius was allegedly a mysterious arcade game that had a very limited release by way of a couple of backwater arcades in a suburb of Portland. The history of the game is cloudy as there were all kinds of strange stories about how kids who played it got amnesia afterward, couldn't remember their name or where they lived, etc. Despite quite a bit of interest in Polybius and several FOIA requests, no concrete evidence of this game or the alleged CIA program behind it has ever been proven to actually exist, leaving Polybius as a mysterious arcade game with a distinctly unique urban legend status. The title screen attributed a company by the name of Sinneslöschen as the developer, not-quite-idiomatic German for "sense delete."
