Bawal umihi dito: It is an ubiquitous injunction in urban spaces, often boldly painted onto walls, and it translates to "it is forbidden to urinate here". The audience? Filipino men, many of whom continue to take the liberty of emptying their bladders in front of walls, electric posts, and yes, jeepney tires. Go to any densely-populated nooks of the metropolis and there's no denying the pungent odor of piss, which ironically juxtaposes with the aforementioned sign, as if to affirm its relevance by its violation. This is the Filipinos’ way of telling you the direction by using their mouths, usually paired with the phrase, “Ober der (it’s over there)” followed by their lips pouting in that direction. We know, it’s peculiar. But it is what it is.

“Bahala na” (bah-hah-la nah) is a Filipino expression used to express an attitude of optimistic acceptance or fatalistic resignation in an uncertain or difficult situations. In the Philippines the fatalistic attitude is reflective of the Catholicism of the Filipino people, who entrust their fate in the hands of God. Many times bahala na is a saying that expresses a mentality that despite one's free will, one cannot do anything about the larger existing circumstances of their situation. Budots is a grassroots electronic dance music genre that originated in Davao City, Philippines, and is considered as street style hiphop. It eventually spread in Bisaya-speaking regions. A very Filipino take on a trending bag from Thailand. “Anong gentle gentle?” is a popular quote from a Tagalog dubbed anime show that was shown in the Philippines in the 90s called Gost Fighter, where Taguro passive-aggressively says the line to Eugene. Recently, it has risen to meme status, usually used when you’re so stressed and you just don’t want to baby people anymore.

This design is to celebrate hip hop and rap in the Philippines. It’s the sun in the Philippine flag, with the colors of the Filipino jeepney signage.
