The 149th Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Army, provided by the Kentucky Army National Guard. It was originally constituted 22 May 1846 in the Kentucky Militia as the 1st Kentucky Cavalry and the 2d Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. After a year of Federal service (June 1846 to June 1847), it was reorganized on 15 June 1860 in the Kentucky State Guard as the Lexington Battalion (which included the Lexington Rifles). It was then expanded in November 1860 to comprise the Lexington Battalion and the Kentucky River Battalion. U.S. Army Garrison Heidelberg included Campbell Barracks (the former Wehrmacht Großdeutschland-Kaserne) where headquarters for several units were located until 2013, including U.S. Army, Europe (USAREUR). Campbell Barracks and Mark Twain Village were both located in Heidelberg-Südstadt; Patton Barracks in nearby Heidelberg-Kirchheim was home to the U.S. Army Garrison Baden-Württemberg. Nachrichten Kaserne in Heidelberg-Rohrbach was home to the former 130th Station Hospital, later designated the Heidelberg Health Center, and Headquarters, Seventh Medical Command (HQ, 7th MEDCOM), which was the parent unit to 264 subordinate US and NATO medical, dental and veterinary units located from Norway to the Mediterranean Sea, from Spain to Germany.

The 81st Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army. 1st Battalion, 81st Field Artillery Regiment. The 1st Missile Battalion, 81st Artillery was formed at Fort Sill in 1963 and deployed to McCully Barracks in Wackernheim, West Germany under the 56th Field Artillery Group. The battalion moved to Wiley Barracks, Neu-Ulm in 1968 and was redesignated the 1st Battalion, 81st Field Artillery Regiment effective 1 September 1971. It was initially equipped with eight Pershing 1 missiles and in 1969 replaced these with 36 Pershing 1a missiles. Service Battery was inactivated and reflagged as B Company, 55th Maintenance Battalion in 1982.

The 8 inch (203 mm) M110 self-propelled howitzer is an American-made self-propelled artillery system consisting of an M115 203 mm howitzer installed on a purpose-built chassis. The M110A2 is a self-propelled heavy artillery cannon with a crew of 12. Designed to be part of a common family of weapons utilising the same chassis components, the M107 and M110 were essentially the same vehicle mounting different barrels.
