This work is infused with a powerful sense of heat, light and realism. It depicts a pub at the end of its functionality, basking in the sun, with what lies inside now a mystery, its future uncertain. The pub was in fact the location of the video "Red, Red Wine," by UB40 and is in Birmingham's Digbeth district. I have used my own photography to inform and inspire this work, which is executed in acrylic on a canvas frame.

A hidden corner that hugs the Water of Leith, on my way to the Botanical Gardens. A day of glorious Scottish sunshine, of a clear blue sky and gentle warmth. The stone radiates gold, brilliant white from the woodwork, with dots of yellow from sunflowers. It is quiet here, with Stockbridge a short walk away. The work is rich in realism and detail, filled with vivid colour; A wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh and a perfect gift.

A long walk on hot streets, the smell of tar and London plain. On a corner, a pub, a play of shadow and light, of colour, blue sky and purple stucco. The bricks reflect the light, golden almost. Inside we can seek shade, refreshment, in dark shadow and cosy nooks. The work is rich in light, in gentle yet vivid colour, a wonderful souvenir of London, a great gift.

The sound of the Minster bells is loud, throbbing almost, as though the air were alive and the ground vibrating, echoing and awakening childhood memories of half a century earlier. I love it here, my birth town, the place where my life began, the crucible of my earliest consciousness. I went to school here, had my first birthday cakes and Christmases here. It was my small world, safe and English and nice. The work is rich in light and colour, yet simple too. A wonderful souvenir of Yorkshire.

A walk in Amsterdam brings me to the doors of the main post office building, neo-gothic and redbrick, turrets and towers, shadows cast. I savour the joy of being in the city once again, to hear the tram bells and the cries of seagulls, to inhale the aroma of frying, of roasting coffee and the gentle hint of brine that lingers. A day of freedom awaits, a day to explore the alleys and the shops, alone, unhurried. For now I look up at the post office, transfixed by the symmetry. This work is very rich in realism and detail. It is a fantastic souvenir of Holland, a great gift, a perfect addition to any collection of Dutch art.

A wonderful, almost secret corner of Hull, a place of Bohemian charm, of Victoriana laid bare, rough at the edges at times, splendid palaces of bourgeoisie aging gently, their red bricks eroded. Nature spreads inexorably at the edges, a cool shadow and a musk-like scent, patches of mystery and darkness. Nearby, a stone’s throw away perhaps, is Newland Avenue, where cafés serve rich chocolate cake, cinnamon flavoured coffee, pots of strong tea in porcelain cups, accompanied by gooey scones and whipped cream. Charity shops with their promise of discovered treasure, and off-licences scented with spirit and hops. I love London’s mews. Little corners of peace, cobbles that still ring to ghostly hooves. Here London belongs to me once more. The shadows keep patches of cool shade, and mysterious windows look down on me. I imagine how wonderful it would be to live here, to tend a little urban garden of potted plants and fragrant wisteria. I am drawn to the bricks, to the scorched soot-drenched terracotta that evokes a London of yore, of belching sulphurous smoke and a whiff of the once imperial capital, that city of dreadful delight. Each brick holds a story. The work is rich in colour and in detail. It makes a wonderful gift, a perfect souvenir of London, and a great addition to any collection of urban-themed works.

A favorite walk, a place of constant return, unchanging, the gentle assurance of history and memory. Here I find a wonderful café with cream cakes and silver tea pots and faded, retro beauty, A portal to another decade, to another time. I am transfixed by the blue and the pink stucco, and by the vivid colors of the shop fronts. This is my secret corner of London that forever belongs to me. The painting is a wonderful gift of London and a perfect addition to any collection.

This work depicts a street corner in London, a place made remarkable by its eclectic architecture, a place of magic where turrets pierce the blue sky, garrets and glimpses into a dozen private worlds. I marvel at the contrasting colours, reddish and ochre Victorian brick, seeped in hundred year old soot, and smooth walls of burgundy plaster. The work is rich in colour, in realism and makes a perfect gift of London.

A place that never seems to change, that always offers the same, a simple choice, to be taken or left, over decades. I cannot remember when I first saw this café and I don’t think I have ever eaten here, but I am glad it exists, an anchor, a source of Proustian scent, of bacon, toast, grease and coffee. I pause to look at the choices, taunting myself, mulling the range of cheese sandwiches, ham, peanut butter and more. Beyond London stretches outwards, and I make ready to move on, into Bloomsbury or up to Kings Cross. But for this moment I inhale once more the scent of the full English. A lovely gift from London, a fantastic souvenir, rich in detail, in colour and in atmosphere.

Abstract victorian carnival

A familiar corner of London, of Soho. A place of loud voices and clinking glasses, a vibe of pure energy, of socialising and Bacchanalian pleasure, of joy and youth. Beer, wine, crisps, a whiff of nicotine. It is late afternoon, on Friday, and the weekend stretches with its promise of brunches and candlelit dinners, of walks by the Thames and picnics in parks. I know the area so well. It is embedded in my psyche. This work depicts a corner pub, rich in detail, in light and shadow.

It is early on Sunday morning, and London has yet to wake up. I have Soho to myself. I love the green tiles of the shop front, the way the shadow draws me to the alleyway, mysterious and deserted. Windows draw me upwards, and I imagine what lies inside. It is Sunday morning in London and the day beckons with its promise of brunch, of designer coffees, of walks and friendship. The work is rich in detail, rich in colour too, with elements of realism that make it a great addition to any collection of London art.
