Henrietta Lacks, after whom HeLa cells are named, standing outside her home in Baltimore, USA. HeLa cells are the first human cell line to be cultured for research into cancer. The source of the cells was an epidermoid carcinoma biopsy from the cervix of Henrietta Lacks aged 31. The tumour proved invulnerable to treatment and she died of cervical cancer 8 months later. At the time, scientists had no success growing cancer cells in the laboratory. HeLa cells, however, thrived. In the decades since 1952, HeLa cells have been used in research around the world. Alexander of Macedon (left, 356-323 BC) and Aristotle (right, 384-322 BC), the Ancient Greek philosopher and naturalist. Aristotle, a member of the Macedonian aristocracy, spent nearly 20 years at Plato's Academy in Athens. He returned to Macedon in around 342 BC and taught the young prince rhetoric, literature, science, medicine, and philosophy. The Death of Socrates (1787) by the French artist Jacques-Louis David. This famous scene, described in the writings of Plato (at foot of bed), shows the Ancient Greek philosopher Socrates (c.470-399 BC, centre) still teaching his students in prison as he reaches for a cup of hemlock (a poison) with which to commit suicide. This scene followed his conviction for corrupting the youth of Athens with his teachings. His friend Crito is holding his leg. In the background, his wife is seen leaving the prison.
