Insignia is worn by members of the 1st and 2nd Battalions 1st Infantry Regiment. Constituted on 3 March 1791 as the 2nd Infantry, the regiment was redesignated as the Infantry of the 2nd Sub-Legion the following year and then as te 2nd Infantry in 1796. It was first given its current numerical designation in 1815, when three regiments—the 3rd, 7th, and 44th—were consolidated to form the 1st Infantry in 1815.
