Tilly Whim Caves Tilly Whim caves are situated on the south coast of England, a couple of miles south west of Swanage (Dorset) and not far from Durlston Head. The caves are actually former Purbeck Stone quarries, which were worked extensively during the 18th century, predominantly to build fortifications during the Napoleonic wars. In 1887, the caves were opened as a tourist attraction, but were closed in 1976 following rock falls which led to them being classified as too dangerous. The caves form part of the famous 'Jurassic Coast', a 96 mile long world heritage site, which stretches from Old Harry Rocks, near Studland down to Exmouth in Devon.
