The Dorset Lakes This is a shot of Poole Harbour (Dorset, England), taken from the footpath running along the south coast of Brownsea Island, looking south west towards the Purbeck Hills. Poole Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world, after Sydney, Australia. Brownsea (or Branksea), at 1.5 miles long and 0.75 miles wide, is the largest of the eight islands in Poole Harbour and is known as the birthplace of the Scout movement, following Baden-Powell's experimental camp held on the island in 1907. The island top right is Furzey Island, which from a distance looks uninhabited. However, the outer circle of trees hide no less than 22 oil wells, part of the Wytch Farm oil field, the largest onshore oil field in Western Europ...

A Fascinating Folly Number of views as of 6th May 2016 = 700. Said to have once been the tallest, non-religious building in Britain, Horton Tower (also known as Sturt's Folly) is a 5 storey, gothic, red brick structure, 140 feet tall, designed and built by Humphrey Sturt, Lord of the Manor of Horton in 1750. As well as being an architect, Sturt was also a member of parliament for Dorset. The reason for its original construction is unknown, but one theory suggests its owner planned to use the tower as an observatory, for studying the night sky. Another suggests Sturt built it as a lookout tower so that he could observe hunting in progress on the surrounding countryside. Green Island Number of views as of 16th April 2019 = 970. At 45 acres, Green Island is the third largest island in Poole Harbour (Dorset, England) after Brownsea and Furzey. The island is an Area of Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area. It consists primarily of woodland, with some heathland, and its features include a private beach, private jetty and even a helipad. It is privately owned, the asking price from a few years ago being 2.5 million pounds. Plans were recently approved to build a six-bedroom carbon-neutral holiday home on the island, made from cedar logs and powered by solar panels. Most people think of Portland Bill (Dorset, UK) as the quarry where all that stone that built London came from, or else the place with lighthouse at the end, but never a place with a beach. Tucked away beneath the cliffs about half way along the peninsula, lies Church Ope Cove - a secluded beach of large white pebbles (Portland Stone) and a few unglamorous beach huts. Half way up the path a turn takes you to the remains of the church - little more than a few gravestones, here completely hidden by the shrubbery. I painted this 20 inch x 30 inch picture in oils on board based on a photo I took late Spring 2016. The Old Lifeboat Station, Poole, Dorset, England Number of views as of 7th September 2018 = 280. Established in 1882 and replacing an older building at Sandbanks, Poole's old lifeboat station at Fisherman's Dock saw 92 years of active service before being converted into a museum. Key events in the station's history: In October 1884, James Hughes, a member of the lifeboat crew, fell in front of the main wheels of the carriage whilst getting out of the lifeboat after an exercise, and was killed. In 1897, a slipway was constructed at a cost of £135. In January 1919, rescued 21 Japanese crew members of an ex-German submarine.
