1101 Magnets

Tommy 1101 is a sculpture that sits on permanent display next to the cenotaph on the coast at Seaham Harbour. Created and named to commemorate the end of hostilities and to remember of all of the war dead and injured from World war One, Tommy sits with head bowed. The stone poppy and the embroidered poppies are added in the run up to the anniversary of Armistace Day.

This imposing metal sculpture, entitled 1101, owing to the fact the armistice went into effect at 11am on November 11, 1918, stands 9ft 5ins tall and weighs 1.2 tonnes. Built out of special corteen steel, it has been installed on Seaham seafront in Country Durham to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War. Created by local artist Ray Lonsdale, the sculpture is also intended to represent Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which many of the returning soldiers endured.

Here the image has been converted to black and white and the colour re-introduced to the pebbles to show the effect of the poppy.
