Leonid meteor shower. Historical artwork of the spectacular Leonid meteor shower of 13 November 1833. The shower's three hour peak resulted in terror. Meteors, also called shooting stars, are tiny dust grains which enter the Earth's atmosphere and glow as they are heated by air resistance. Leonid meteor showers occur annually for about 2 days around mid November when the Earth crosses the orbit of debris produced by the comet Tempel-Tuttle. These meteors enter the atmosphere at speeds of about 72 kilometres per second. There are 5-20 meteors each hour, apart from about once every 33 years when thousands can be seen. This artwork was made in 1889.

John Glover was an English-born Australian landscape artist who played a significant role in the development of early colonial art in Australia. He is often referred to as the father of Australian landscape painting and is celebrated for his ability to capture the unique beauty of the Australian landscape.

Merchant’s Gargling Oil was founded in Lockport, New York by Dr. George W. Merchant, a druggist, in 1833. The ointment was intended for surface wounds and skin ailments common to horses, cattle, sheep, and poultry. A version was also made for human skin problems, but not until 1875. It was at this time that the product was marketed as being "Good for Man and Beast.” Neither product was intended for internal use, despite the product name, so you can stop thinking about horses gargling right now, mister. For anyone who might be curious, Merchant’s Gargling Oil was a mixture of petroleum, soap, ammonia water, oil of amber, iodine tincture, benzine, and water. The oil could be found on shelves until 1928 when the factory burned down.

Hokusai's work transformed the ukiyo-e artform from a style of portraiture largely focused on courtesans and actors into a much broader style of art. This incredible artist's work has been vividly remastered into technicolor for a vibrant new style.
