Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River, approximately 30 kilometres south of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta, Canada, and just west of the Icefields Parkway.

What a contrast this scene was -- in one direction, we could see the glacial rapids of the Athabasca River hurtling over the edge of the falls under blue skies; in the other, we could see (yet another) angry storm approaching as a rainbow or two appeared in the mist. If you haven't driven the Icefields Parkway through the Canadian Rockies, put it on your bucket list now. This view is one of hundreds you'll have to stop and gawk at along the way!

While Athabasca Falls may not be the tallest waterfall I’ve ever seen, it was one of the more powerful. Here, the Athabasca River, which had seemed so calm upstream, raged through a canyon much narrower than the river had been, creating a massive din and spray that got all over my camera no matter what angle I tried to shoot from. Fortunately, there were a lot of angles to choose from — either side of the falls or from the bridge between them — because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to get my camera wedged in between the tourists (myself included) that flock to the Canadian Rockies in July and August. It's hard to believe that this was taken around 10am, but when you've got a blanket of smoke smothering you from a season full of wildfires, the world looks a little bit different. This was one of the worst weeks of smoke we experienced over the summer, and it happened to coincide with my only trip of the summer to Jasper. It made for a very different visit from my previous trips up there, and actually resulted in one of my favourite shots I've ever captured of Athabasca Falls.

Not far from where the gigantically-wheeled Ice Explorer bus stops on the Athabasca Glacier is this rapidly running river. Apparently, there never used to be running water on top of the glacier, but now there is so much melted ice running below the glacier that this water had nowhere else to go. It made for a gorgeous -- but sad -- sight.

Even in the -20º temperatures of a March morning in Jasper, the Athabasca River was flowing freely, the ice floating in its current just obscuring the reflections of the national park's mountains beyond.

The rocks of the gorge at Athabasca Falls are fascinating. Not only are they stunning colours, but the shapes betray how years and years of water movement have shaped the entirety of the gorge.

The crush of Athabasca Falls as the wide Athabasca River narrows and is forced through a small gorge. It made for an impressive -- and very loud -- sight!
