Bromeliads growing in the Casa Orquideas which is one of the oldest & most interesting botanical gardens in the Golfo Dulce region of Costa Rica. Bromiliads are epiphytes. An epiphyte is an organism that grows on the surface of another plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, or from debris accumulating around it. It sometimes grows on fallen logs. It is not a parasite. What looks like a colourful flower are bracts which protect its very small flowers. Canon 6D, zoom lens. I discovered this fabulous Bromeliad at The Olive Branch Bromeliad Nursery in Brisbane, Australia, and I just had to paint it! The Harlequin Beetle came to visit me one night on my door screen so I thought they would be a perfect pairing.
