It is a very little known historic fact that Maestro Cab Calloway, former master-of-ceremonies at Harlem's iconic Cotton Club, band leader, musician, singer, actor, racial activist, and entrepreneur is the individual most responsible for the world coming to recognize New York City as the Big Apple. Calloway published his Hepster's Dictionary in 1938, that for the first time DEFINED "Apple" in print as "the big town, the main stem, Harlem," which by 1944 had sold over two million copies worldwide, introducing the original Harlem slang term to the rest of the planet as the Harlem Renaissance era was coming to a close
