Cottage Gardens Magnets

Trelissick house at Feock, Cornwall has one of the most beautiful spring gardens in England. It is now owned by the National Trust. The painting depicts the first rhododendrons in flower and Ferris Cottage, named after the gardener who lived there. This and my previous two paintings of Cornwall will be sent to England to be exhibited in the Lander Gallery Spring Exhibition next month but the originals may be purchased direct from me before for €200 each painting. The magical cottage was hand-drawn with soft pastels, gel pens and coloured pencils and then was exposed in raw and Photoshop.

I love the style of the traditional Cottage Garden with the flowers closely planted which creates a mass of intertwined blooms and explosion of colour. This design is from an original painting by Colette Baumback

A tiny chocolate box cottage on the Stourhead Lake. Also known as Watch Cottage, this was originally a rustic building. The lake at Stourhead is artificially created. Following a path around the lake is meant to evoke a journey similar to that of Aeneas's descent in to the underworld.The gardens were designed by wealthy banker, Henry Hoare II and laid out between 1741 and 1780 in a classical 18th-century design set around a large lake, achieved by damming a small stream.

Gardener's Cottage, Princes St Gardens, Edinburgh

In the Botanical Gardens is to be found the most perfect of Scottish gardens. Flowers and ferns, manicured lawns that remind me of the West Highlands, lavender and heather. Behind is a small house, transported brick by brick from elsewhere. It soothes me here, in this wonderful land of plants and make believe, tucked away behind high stone walls, a domain that existed before I was born and will live on after me. Fleeting memories come to me in the Botanical Gardens, from 50 years ago, of benches where adults sat whilst I deployed my toy soldiers on the flag stones, of wondrous walks through the mini jungles of Victorian hothouses. The work is rich in detail, in colour, and it makes a perfect addition to any collection, a great gift too.

Gardener's cottage, in West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland. Princes Street Gardens were acquired by the city in 1876 and further landscaped by the City Architect Robert Morham (1839 -1912). Morham also built the Gardener's cottage in 1886. A blue summer cottage garden,

The lock keeper's cottage at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Situated where the Thames flows between the north Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills known as the Goring Gap. The first lock here was a flash lock with paddles instead of gates. The first pound lock was constructed in 1787 using oak. The rather fine lock keeper's cottage dates from 1879, just before the lock was rebuilt in 1886. The last rebuild was in 1921 with a refit in 2003.

Standing on the side of the river lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, looking over to the white painted lock keeper's cottage and the wooden office. The top gates are open and the lock chamber is full waiting for the next boat travelling downstream to enter. The weeather's been hot so there are umbrellas over control boxes to offer shade to the operator!

The scene walking by the lock at Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. This side of the lock has a profusion of flowers whilst on the island, next to the lock keeper's cottage, are neat gardens. In the background the river rushes through the weir before flowing onward to Pangbourne and Reading. At this point the Thames passes between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs - this is known as the Goring Gap.
