Sirius binary star system, Hubble Space Telescope image. Sirius A (centre, Alpha Canis Majoris), in the constellation Canis Major, is the brightest star in the night sky and only 8.6 light years from Earth. It has a very small, faint companion, Sirius B (small dot at lower left). Sirius B, only 12,000 kilometres in diameter, is a white dwarf star, the collapsed core of a star. Normally, the companion star would be obscured by the brightness of its companion, but Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 instrument was used to locate the star, and other instruments were then used to measure the gravitational redshift of its light, and hence its mass. Sirius B has a mass 98% of that of our Sun. The results were published in December 2005.

This image was taken in Depoe Bay, OR on August 21, 2017. To capture different aspects of the total eclipse, I set my cameras up for bracketed exposures, over and under exposing the images by 2 and 4 stops. To capture any Red Prominences (the bright, gaseous features extending outward from the Sun's surface, and into the Sun's corona) that might be visible, this image was underexposed by 2 stops. This underexposure allowed the camera to capture any of the bright prominences, at the expense of not being able to capture the less bright corona. In this image, taken seconds before the end of totality, you can see several prominences, most notably the one at 1 o'clock.

This image was taken in Depoe Bay, OR on August 21, 2017. It had been clear the 3 days prior to the eclipse, but we woke up to a very overcast sky, there on the coast, the morning of the eclipse. I almost didn't set up my cameras, but finally did about an hour before the start. This was taken about a minute into totality, and was overexposed by 4 stops in order to capture the corona (sun's atmosphere). I feel very fortunate to get this shot, since the sky was still very hazy at the time. I have no idea if it would be have been different, had the sky been clear.
