In the foreground is the graveyard at Grytviken, South Georgia, from the time when it was a whaling station. The most important historical grave here is that of Sir Earnest Shackleton, the Antarctic explorer. South Georgia is a British Overseas Territory. Grytviken is now the home to an Antarctic Scientific Station. Current work on the island involves ridding the island of introduced reindeer, which were originally brought as food for Norwegian whalers. Rats have been successfully eliminated.
