Although most diatom species occur in aquatic habitats, specific diatom communities occur in soil where they grow with other microalgae and cyanobacteria. Nucleosome, molecular model. A nucleosome is a subunit of chromatin, which forms chromosomes. It consists of a short length of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, purple and cream helices) wrapped around a core of eight histone proteins. This structure allows large quantities of DNA, the genetic material, to be packaged into a cell's nucleus.

Mitochondria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of mitochondria (blue) in an adipocyte (fat cell). Mitochondria are a type of organelle found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. They oxidise sugars and fats to produce energy in a process called respiration. A mitochondrion has two membranes, a smooth outer membrane and a folded inner membrane. The folds of the inner membrane are called cristae, and it is here that the chemical reactions to produce energy take place. Magnification: x20,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.

Trypanosomes undergo part of their development in the blood of a vertebrate host. Two species, which are transmitted through the bites of tsetse flies, cause sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis). Another species, which is transmitted by reduviid insects, causes Chagas' disease. Both diseases may be fatal if not treated. Magnification: x6000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
