Often described as the gay Cheers, Little Jim’s was the first gay bar in Boystown when it opened in 1975, making it the second-oldest gay bar in Chicago. In the early days, the bar had darkened windows to protect the safety of its customers. Within a few years of opening, more gay bars followed Little Jim's lead into the neighborhood. The divey, late-night spot became both a Boystown institution and one of the longest-running independently owned bars in the Chicago. A big part of the bar's legacy is that it was the first and only bar on Halsted Street to be fully integrated. Black, white, and Hispanic people all mingled and socialized there – literally everyone was welcome.

Located in San Francisco's Castro District at 500 Castro Street, Harvey's was an iconic bar and restaurant that welcomed tourists and regulars alike for over a quarter-century. Occupying a space that originally housed The Elephant Walk gay bar, which first opened in 1974, Harvey's was steeped in history based on location alone. After a major fire gutted the building in 1988, The Elephant Walk required extensive work to get it back up and running, so they ended up closing down as a result. Named after gay politician and activist Harvey Milk, Harvey's took over the space in 1996, residing at the popular corner location until early 2023 when they closed up shop.

Tugs Belltown Tavern is considered by many to be the best Seattle gay bar of all time. The legendary Tugs opened their doors in October 1976 at 2207 1st Ave. and quickly showed the city what a gay bar could be. The tavern hosted a wide variety of musical style theme nights, making the transition from jukebox-only to live DJs in '78. They had a downstairs DJ booth where patrons could walk up to the window and look at the record being played. Customers would dance until dawn, often spilling into the streets or up on the roof in the small hours. Tugs also hosted live shows, movie nights, and tons of other regular events (every Saturday was Spaghetti Night!) which were all detailed in a monthly calendar that was designed and printed by hand.

This Retro Gay Bar design is purple, kitschy, and utterly fabulous! Sitting on mid century modern barstools, drinking their fun, pink beverages, these dapper gentlemen are having a gay ol’ time. The hunky bartender with a pink bowtie is already pouring the next round. The silhouettes of atomic liquor bottles line the wall and the vintage 1960’s sputnik style light fixture hangs off to the side. The only thing straight about this bar is the bar!
