The Hannya (般若) mask. It is a mask used in Noh theater, representing a jealous female demon. It possesses two sharp bull-like horns, metallic eyes, and a leering mouth.

You will often find a pair of these Lion Dogs standing guard outside the gates of a Japanese Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple, to prevent evil from entering. The Shishi-mai (Guardian Lion Dance) is a traditional dance in Japan in which performers wear a lion costume and mimic a lion's movements to music. The dance is usually performed as part of New Year's celebrations as well as other traditional, cultural and religious festivals.
