Grey Squirrel Magnets

The past few weeks, I’ve been watching the grey squirrels in the trees behind our house foraging for food to hibernate over winter. I’ve always liked squirrels so I wanted to produce a new art piece of one to go along with my other wildlife paintings. I’ve tried attracting them to our feeder in the garden, but the pigeons seem to be taking over.

A gray squirrel leaping! Or is it flying? Gray squirrels are very funny and cute, and VERY well-known everywhere in eastern North America. You can't step outside without bumping into a gray squirrel in New England, where I grew up. Running along power lines, bounding across yards, sitting on tree branches, hanging upside-down from people's bird-feeders before being chased away with shouts and fists shaken after them. I like gray squirrels, because they always seem to be in a jolly mood, and taking life at a relaxing worry-free pace. In the style of a watercolor painting.

As Eastern grey squirrels forage for nuts, seeds, buds, and flowers of trees they plas an important role in what's known as seed dispersal. Eastern grey squirrels Sciurus carolinensis commonly occur in two colour phases, grey and black, which leads people to think—mistakenly—that there are two different species.
