Greater Roadrunner

Winter Sighting of the Greater Roadrunner © Debra Martz It was February 1st, 2024 and this was the first sighting of a Roadrunner since the freezing winter of 2020-21. Prior to that year, we saw at least one every time we went to the Great Salt Plains State Park in northern Oklahoma. I hope this is a sign of more to come. Great Roadrunner takes a Brief Pause by Debra Martz Meep meep!! Catch me if you can!!! They are fast birds that prefer to run rather than fly. And boy can they run....up to 15 miles an hour and maybe even faster when on to prey. This one stopped briefly on the road where I was walking, showed off its beautiful crest of colored of feathers, and off again like a flash.

This was one very busy Roadrunner, running back and forth chasing and catching insects. Most every time we visit this state park, we see Greater Roadrunners yet Cornell Lab Merlin app lists them as uncommon. One Very Surprised Roadrunner by Debra Martz Astonished, amazed, startled, stunned, flabbergasted, shocked, stopped in its tracks, etc . The look was quite hilarious when it spotted me or maybe it was that big old black camera and a very long lens! Either way, it did a quick 90 degree turn and took off running! Roadrunners aka Chapparals can fly, but they usually do not. Instead, they run at speeds up to 15mph.
