This design is based off an ancient piece of artwork from ancient Babylon. The lion is part of the famous Ishtar Gate and a lion is an animal associated with the goddess of love and war, Ishtar. I have based this design on the piece located in The Met's collection. I have recreated this lion in my own unique style making a unique take on this famous piece of artwork!

Ishtar Gate and Lamassu

The lamassu is a celestial being from Mesopotamian mythology bearing a human head, bull's body, sometimes with the horns and the ears of a bull, and wings. It appears frequently in Mesopotamian art. Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was constructed in about 575 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city. It was excavated in the early 20th century and a reconstruction using original bricks is now shown in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin. This piece was created using digital techniques to make the painting colorful and vibrant.

His inscription on the Ishtar Gate reads: “I (Nebuchadnezzar) laid the foundation of the gates down to the ground water level and had them built out of pure blue stone. I covered their roofs by laying majestic cedars length-wise over them
