Merchant Marine Magnets

Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal is awarded to U.S. merchant seamen who serve on U.S.-flag ships in support of operations involving American and allied military forces. The medal is not specific to a certain military operation or conflict, but the award citation would give such details.[2] It has been presented to individuals for service in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. It has also been presented to Merchant Mariners sailing in support of Naval Operations with the US Navy's Military Sealift Command, including Cadet Midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (also known as USMMA or Kings Point) is one of the five United States service academies, located in Kings Point, New York. It is charged with training officers for the United States Merchant Marine, branches of the military, and the transportation industry. Midshipmen (as students at the Academy are called) are trained in marine engineering, navigation, ship's administration, maritime law, personnel management, international law, customs, and many other subjects important to the task of running a large ship.

The city of Port Arthur began as the dream of railroad man Arthur Stilwell, who envisioned it as a trade and tourism center. By the time the city was incorporated in 1898, Stilwell had founded the Port Arthur Channel and Dock Co., which welcomed its first ship to the port of Port Arthur the following year. In just two years, oil was discovered in nearby Beaumont, kicking off the Spindletop boom that would see Port Arthur become the biggest oil refining locale in the world by the mid-20th century. In 1948 the town held its Golden Jubilee celebration, 50 years after its incorporation as a city which centered around a parade with drummers marching down Procter Street trailed by floats, including one with the Golden Jubilee queen and her court.

Inspired by my time in the Navy. Standing Aft Watch was a seemingly boring duty aboard ship, but standing alone at the fantail was a moment of hyper-awareness of time and space with the immense sea before you, the sky rising above, and the horizon disappearing. You simultaneously stood still, yet rushed through time, sleepy, hungry, lonely, pensive, anxious about everything in life but strangely at peace. Sometimes you numbly stood like another fixture on the ship till you heard a voice on the sound powered phones “Aft lookout! You awake! Report!!”
