Klima, is one of the typical seaside, traditional fishing villages of Milos, known as "Syrmata", probably the most colourful and famous among them. In fact "syrmata" is the name of the small houses of this kind of settlements. But why "syrmata"? They are called like this because they have a special mechanism to "syroun" (=draw) the boats inside during winter. Sometimes they have two floors (each floor never bigger than 20-25 square meters, and some other times only one floor "built" inside a cave. During summer the inhabitants of the inland, put their boats in the sea and use "syrmata" as summer "villas". Above Plaka, Milos' capital, on the way to Kastro, the old castle of the island, you can enjoy on of the most spectacular sunsets of the Aegean. You can also see the remains of the old castle and three beautiful churches. The one to the left, is Panagia Thalassitra (1738) and a bit more to the right is the tiny church of Panagia Eleousa. Plaka is the "capital" of Milos, the most beautiful village of the island, a real "Hora" of the Cyclades. Although it's located quite far from the sea, on the top of a hill, it has been for the last centuries the "base" of the Milian mariners. The seamen of Milos were considered the best "pilotoi" (=navigators) of the Mediterranean, and were payed very well to offer their services. The could take any ship, anywhere in the Mediterranean with excellent precision, in a time when the Radars and the GPS, were not even science fiction. So they chose to live much higher than sea level, so they could easily spot passing ships. The other reason they chose to live far from the sea, was to avoid pirates' attacks.

Fyriplaka beach, is one of my favourite beaches of Milos island (Cyclades, Aegean Sea, Greece), with wonderful rocky formations in the sea but also some colourful rocks in the background, and, most important some incredibly clear turquoise waters. Fyropotamos is one of the most picturesque seaside setlements with "syrmata" in Milos island (Cyclades, Greece). The settlements with "syrmata" is one of the most beautiful characteristics of this unique island. Other tiny villages with this typical style of liliput houses are, Klima, Mandrakia, Fourkovouni, Areti, Aghios Konstantinos and Mytakas. What amazes me in this type of villages, besides the beauty of simplicity, is the strong feeling of comunity, the warm bonds between the members of these villages, and their tight conection with the sea. Right above Fyropotamos, one of the most beautiful settlements with "syrmata" in Milos island (Cyclades, Greece), you can see the small church of the village and an old, ruined installation for loading minerals to ships. Looks like a gate straight to the sea.

Can anyone explain how on Earth, could a rock like this have been created? With the geological history of Milos island (Cyclades, Greece) everything seems possible. The greatest artist of all times, Nature, had a creativity and imagination uplift, when creating this unique island. If you want to see such "psychedelic" rock and pebbles you should go the Kastanas beach on the east coast of Milos. Get a good map of the island and don't be afraid of the dirtroads! Don't pick a pebble as a souvenir! A local legend says, that everytime a visitor took a pebble as a souvenir, the pebble was losing its colours as soon as it left Milos. Can you believe it?

Tons of lava from some volcanic explosion a couple of millions years ago, froze rapidly and with the help of erosion, wind and sea, created some unearthly landscapes in Milos island (Cyclades, Aegean Sea, Greece). Papafrangas cave is located at the northwest side of Milos island (Cyclades, Aegean Sea, Greece) , about 4 km from Pollonia (or "Apollonia") village, and right beside the very important prehistoric arhaelogical site of Fylakopi. About 7-8 years ago, during my first visit to Milos, I remember that people could go down there and swim. The last time I went there, there was a rope and a sign that prohibited the descent to the cave-beach, because the "carved" path on the rock, is too steep and dangerous. Anyway I went down there and took this photo. *TECHNICAL INFO: I lowered manually the ISO to 50, used a small aperture (f/22), an ND-4 (2-stop down) filter, a polarizer and a tripod for this long shutter speed.

This is Mr Stelios Kamakaris, but everyone in Milos island (Cyclades, Greece) knows him by his nickname, "Bizas" or "Bizis", I think. He has been a seaman, a fisherman all his life. How did I meet him? I was surching for an open "Syrma" (plural="Syrmata", a special kind of tiny seaside buildings used as boat "parking" and summer residenses, seen mostly in Milos island,), I wanted to take some inside photos. I found him sitting in his "Syrma" in Mandrakia, talking with another gentleman. "Can I take a couple of photos from your Syrma?", I asked him. "Of course", he said, "but first, take a seat, I will bring you a cup of coffee, you look very tired". I sat there, enjoyed my coffee, and the conversation with Mr. Stelios and the ot...
