The Holland America ship Koningsdam tied up in St. Maarten for a day of fun exploring this wonderful island.

A digital coloured pencil drawing from my orginal photo of canal boats moored at Hungerford Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal in West Berkshire. This is very near the centre of Hungerford - a picturesque market town famed for its antique shops. This is beauyifully peaceful now but many years ago it would have been busy with boats loading and unloading their cargoes and carrying out maintenance. This canal links Bristol and Bath with Reading, the Thames and London.

A narrowboat moored on the banks of the Thames at Lechlade in Gloucestershire on an overcast afternoon, close to the Oxfordshire border and right at the southernmost tip of the Cotswolds. Here we are also at the highest navigable point of the river - St John'sLlock just below this scene being the first (or last) to navigate. Just further upstream the river becomes narrower and shallower - the river looking very little like the mighty Thames flowing through London!

A sunny view across the boats moored in the harbour of the Devonshire seaside town of Torquay.

Cruise ships tied up alongside the quay at Stavanger in Norway. This is the fourth largest city in the country and has a history stretching back to medieval times. Starting life as a village it grew into a fishing port. The discovery of offshore oil and gas made it grow into the major port it is today. The old town and its harbour has old, colourful houses and quayside buildings, the city itself having an eclectic mix of old and new, This image has been finished as pastel art.

A narrowboat moored on the River Thames at Reading in Berkshire, England.. This scene was captured just below Caversham bridge. In the distance can be seen De Montfort Island, site of a historic medieval duel and beyond that Reading Bridge constructed in 1923. On a calm early spring afternoon a pair of swans swim sedately upstream past the moored boats in search of food. A narrow boat moored on the branch of the Avon just before joining with the River Severn at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is just by the lock which enables boats to pass onto the Avon and travel to Stratford - home of Shakespeare. Tewkesbury is an ancient market town dominated by its medieval Abbey, dating from the C12th. The Battle of Tewkesbury fought near here in 1471 during the Wars of the Roses was decisive with the House of York being victorious under Edward - to be crowned Edward IV. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Boats moored at the landing stage at Ray Mill Island on the River Thames in Maidenhead on a summer's day. Behind us is the busy and historic Boulters Lock. Ray Mill Island is named after the Ray family who once owned the flour mill just behind where we are standing. The mill stopped producing flour in the 1920s and is now a restaurant. My original photograph has been edited as a coloured pencil drawing.

[695views 8/9/15] The Polly Woodside is a three-masted iron barque built in Belfast in 1885 by Workman Clark & Co Ltd. The ship's registered gross tonnage was 678 tons. The hull length is 59 m, length is 70 m, beam 9 m and the estimated area of sail when all sails are set is 1110 sq metres. Holland America's m/s EURODAM makes a port call in Grand Turks.

A scene on the Basingstoke canal at Odiham in Hampshire with moored boats. This canal was opened in 1794 and was constructed to link Basingstoke with the River Thames at Weybridge (Surrey) by way of the Wey Navigation. Its purpose was mainly to transport agicultural goods as far as London. However, it was never commercially successful, ceased carrying goods in 1910 and became increasingly derelict. Restoration began in 1977 and it was reopened as far as the Greywell tunnel in 1991.

Boats moored on the Thames riverside just above the old mill at Goring-on-Thames. Just above here the river divides with the navigation channel passing through the lock next to Goring and Streatley weir. Here though it passes under the road bridge before rushing through the sluices and through Goring Mill. But here all is calm, the moorings fronting old half timbered buildings which house amoung other things a dental surgery. It's been a hot summer resulting in a build-up of green weed.

Ahead is the weir - not running so fast at the time of taking as it's been a dry summer! Here the Thames passes through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills to the north and the North Wessex (or Berkshire) Downs to the south.
