Desert elephants or desert-adapted elephants are not a distinct species of elephant but are African bush elephants that have made their homes in the Namib and Sahara deserts in Africa. Namibia's elephant population is growing at about 3.3 percent per year.

It's a hike to get there, but SO worth it. It's like standing on another planet as the sun rises and the shadows and colours change constantly. Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Also written DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, its name means "dead marsh" (from English dead, and Afrikaans vlei, a lake or marsh in a valley between the dunes). The pan also is referred to as "Dooie Vlei" which is the (presumably original) fully Afrikaans name.

Looking down from the rim of the canyon the Tsauchab River flows though the Sesriem Canyon, but it is usually as dry as in this image. At the entry to Sossusvlei is the Sesriem Canyon. As a result of erosion over many centuries, a narrow gorge of about one kilometre in length was formed about 30 to 40 metres deep. Sossusvlei, Namib Desert, Namibia, Africa.
