Northern Fells Magnets

After a rather wet day the sky has cleared and the colours of sunset are appearing. This is one of Cumbria's quiet places - away from the Lake District's summer crowds

Even under threatening skies, the Ylläs Scenic Route lived up to its name, giving tree-framed views of the fells in the distance.

These two, however, stand in solitary state!

Innominate Tarn is a small tarn in the northern Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is located near the summit of Haystacks. The name Innominate means "without a name", however it was formerly known as Loaf Tarn. Alfred Wainwrights ashes were scattered in the area.

The fells around the Duddon Valley are little walked by the masses. One of the most beautiful valleys in the Lake District is criss-crossed with paths, but these tracks belong to the sheep. A beautiful place to explore and some wonderful sights to discover. Here the gateway opens to Ulpha Fell and in the distance The Pike O' Blisco.

Little Langdale is a valley in the Lake District, England containing Little Langdale Tarn and a hamlet also called Little Langdale. A second tarn, Blea Tarn, is in a hanging valley between Little Langdale and the larger Great Langdale to the north.

Angle Tarn is a small mountain lake in Cumbria, situated in The Lake District, on the Angletarn Pikes walk, near to Ullswater and about a mile north east of Hartsop.

The trees weren't bothered by the steep angle of Kesänkitunturi's slopes, although they were perhaps more sensible than I was, since they stayed out of "Pirunkuru" -- which in English, means "damn canyon"!

The Hisehope Reservoir, is the smallest of a group of three reservoirs located on Muggleswick Common, County Durham. The reservoir was opened in 1906. All three reservoirs are located across the Muggleswick, Stanhope and Edmunbyers Commons and the Blanchland Moor, which form part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has all of six summits, the highest being Hallifell Top reaching 2848ft (868m) above sea level. The lookout at Kaunispää hill, just outside the town of Saariselkä and at the top of one of their many ski runs. It was a lot quieter here than in winter, when snowmobiles were constantly whipping by on the track below!

The snow storm has cleared, the blue sky is back, the mist and fog on the hills clearing and it is time to let the sheep back out to graze - Coquet Valley in Northumberland is a beautiful and scenic place to hike, but the winter months can be hard.
