Northern Flicker - this bird first came into my life when I found some of its lovely yellow under feathers. These birds are plentiful in Northern Ontario and are a member of the same family as Woodpeckers. Sometimes mistaken for Mourning Doves these little friends are such a big part of what makes Ontario ecology unique.

Northern Flicker Cross ©Debra Martz When I first saw this Northern Flicker I thought immediately that it was the Red-shafted male due to the red mustache. But, then looking at it on my computer I noticed a red patch on its nape which is something the Yellow-shafted variety has. So I've concluded that this is a cross of the two subspecies (Red-shafted x Yellow-shafted Intergrade). The two Northern Flicker subspecies are the red-shafted and the yellow-shafted of which both can be found in Oklahoma. The male red-shafted has a red mustache while the male yellow-shafted has a black mustache and a red patch on the nape. Though different colours, the Yellow-Shafted Flicker, found in the East, and the Red-Shafted Flicker, found in the West, are the same species. Not visible in this drawing, the yellow-shafted morph has, as the name indicates, bright yellow-shafted wing and tail feathers. Males have a black malar stripe (or moustache), just like on this drawing. The red-shafted morph has red-shafted wing and tail feathers, and males have a red malar stripe. Feeding mostly on insect, nuts and seeds, they also eat berries and fruits in the fall and winter when insects become sparse.

Spectacular spectacle in the North - hard to believe they're real

This is my acrylic painting of the Alabama state bird and flower, the yellowhammer and the red camellia. Alabama soldiers marched off to the Civil War with feathers of the yellowhammer in their soft felt hats. It is more widely known as the yellow-shafted flicker or northern flicker. Alabama was admitted to the union on December 14, 1819 as the 22nd state. This painting is part of my state bird and flower collection.
