Mauna Kea telescopes and comet. Image taken at dawn of telescope domes on Mauna Kea, with comet Hale-Bopp seen in the sky. The telescopes are from lower left to right: Subaru, Keck I and II, NASA infrared facility. Comet Hale-Bopp was one of the brightest comets of the 20th century. Here, its two tails are seen. The gas or "ion" tail (blue) consists of ionized glowing gas blown away from the comet head by the solar wind. The dust tail (white) consists of grains of dust pushed away from the comet head by the radiation of sunlight. Comet Hale-Bopp was seen in early 1997. Mauna Kea, an extinct volcano in Hawaii, has many telescopes on its 4,205 metre high summit.

This image was shortlisted in the biggest astrophotography competition - Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2021! It depicts how the beautiful Milky Way (Dark Horse nebula) and Rho Ophiuchi complex rise above the telescopes of a small observatory near Bern, Switzerland. To me, this scene reminds that even though people are largely restricted to Earth, nothing stops them from exploring the beauties of the universe.

This region is 10,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Carina. This composite image combines data in infrared (red and green) and optical (blue). The infrared data is from the IRAC instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope and 2MASS (Two Micron All Sky Survey). The optical data is from the DSS (Digitized Sky Survey). This allows study of the structure of the nebula. Red areas are hidden behind dark clouds of dust in visible light. Blue areas are not obscured by dust. Image published in 2011.

Its design combined the practical needs of an observatory and astronomer’s residence with the impressive appearance of a public building in an Italianate style. I took this shot from the Griffith Observatory where parts of the James Dean movie "A Rebel Without A Cause" was filmed. This place was amazing because it had an awesome view of the city as you can see here. This is an HDR that was taken with -2, 0, +2 exposures and combined in photomatix. I masked through the original pictures to get the look i wanted. I then took the photo to CS5 where i did further editing with OnOne software and nik effex.

Radcliffe Observatory telescope. 19th-century illustration of the design for the equatorial twin telescope at the Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford, UK. The Radcliffe Observatory functioned as an observatory for 160 years from 1773 until 1934. This 18/24-inch twin refractor telescope was built in 1901, and was transferred to the University of London Observatory. It was constructed by the Grubb Telescope Company, led at the time by Irish telescope engineer Sir Howard Grubb (1844-1931). This design was originally printed in the article 'Equatorial Twin Telescope at the Radcliffe Observatory' in the 21 December 1906 issue of 'Engineering News'.

Johannes Kepler was a German astronomer, mathematician, astrologer, natural philosopher and writer on music. He is a key figure in the 17th-century Scientific Revolution, best known for his laws of planetary motion, and his books Astronomia nova, Harmonice Mundi, and Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae.
