The road bridge over the River Thames at Abingdon in Oxfordshire, England. Abingdon is situated between Oxford and Didcot and was an important centre in medieval times, particularly because of the abbey of which a few buildings remain. Looking across the River Thames at Wallingford in Oxfordshire, England towards the town. This bridge links Wallingford with Crowmarsh Gifford. A bridge was first mentioned in 1141 when King Stephen besieged the castle. However, the first stone bridge was built slightly later and there are apparently elements of this medieval structure in the bridge we see now! Across the river we can see the spire of St Peter's Church dating from 1776-7, a local landmark. This image captured on an autumn afternoon.

Abingdon-on-Thames is a lovely ancient market town which although now in Oxfordshire was once the county town of Berkshire! From her the Thames makes its majestic way to Wallingford and from there to Reading before reaching London and ultimately the North Sea. This is a digital art image.

A quiet backwater at Goring on Thames, Oxfordshire. Here the water is calm having rushed through the mill and now makes its way back to the main river. On the far bank is the church of St Thomas of Canterbury. Goring is a small village on the north bank of the Thames and is joined to Streatley on the south bank by an attractive road bridge. Goring is an extremely picturesque village on the north bank of the Thames in Oxfordshire, just across the river from Streatley in Berkshire. Here the river flows through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills in the north and the Berkshire or North Wessex Downs in the south. Goring has been the haunt of artists including JMW Turner. The river scene at Goring on Thames as viewed from the road bridge. This is one of the most picturesque places along the length of the river at the point where it flows between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs known as the Goring Gap. A lock has been here since the 1500s when a local miller needed a head of water. The present lock was first constructed in 1787 and was rebuilt in 1921.

Here a yellow-painted widebeam barge is moored opposite Rod Eyot, an island sitting in the middle of the river. On the island are several chalets and a brick cottage - only accessible by boat.

The Thames riverside at Henley on Thames in Oxfordshire - and the top of one of the street lamps is a little wonky! Quiet now in winter but in summer a hive of activity with pleasure boats and visitors. In the background is the bridge built in 1786, now Grade 1 listed - and with a weight limit for traction engines! To the left is the tower of the 16th century parish church of St Mary the Virgin. This stretch of the river is famous for boat racing and nearby is the River and Rowing Museum.

Lady of Legend, August 2021 Locomotive number 2999 'Lady of Legend' is something of a rarity since none of the original Saint Class locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward for the Great Western Railway were preserved. That being the case, the Didcot Railway Centre (Oxfordshire, England) began a project in the 1970s to build a new 'Saint'. Lady of Legend (completed in 2019 after many months of painstaking restoration work) is the end result. The frames and boiler were adapted from a Hall class locomotive 'Maindy Hall', recovered from Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, South Wales. Date: 15th August 2021.

Trojan, Didcot, August 2021 "Trojan" is an 0-4-0 ST (Saddle Tank) locomotive, built in 1897 by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol. She was originally operated by Messrs Dunn & Shute of Newport Town Dock and later by the Alexandra Docks Railway, also in Newport (South Wales). In 1923, the Alexandra Docks Railway was absorbed into the Great Western Railway and Trojan was allocated the number 1340. Withdrawn from service by the GWR in 1932, that certainly wasn't the end of the line for Trojan. She moved to the Netherseal colliery in Burton-on-Trent and then onto Alders of Tamworth in 1947, before arriving at Didcot in 1968. Several years of restoration followed, and the engine re-entered service in 2002 after a major boiler refit. Date:...

Being so picturesque, Goring is a favourite location for photographers and painters - including JM Turner!

The church and mill buildings at Whitchurch on Thames viewed from the toll bridge. Whitchurch is in South Oxfordshire and lies on the north bank of the River Thames opposite the Berkshire village of Pangbourne. On a backwater next to the lock is the old mill, now converted into housing together with several old brick and tile cottages. The parish church of St Mary, largely rebuilt in 1857 is thought to be of Saxon origin.

The Angel on the Bridge, Henley, August 2020 The Angel on the Bridge (Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, England) is apparently one of the most photographed and painted pubs in England, perhaps due to its architecture and its prime riverside location on the River Thames. The inn dates from 1728 and is of course a listed building. Here's my monochrome take on it. Date: 4th August 2020.

Red Panda Number of views as of 24th April 2018 = 1030. A beautiful red panda (latin name: Ailurus Fulgens) at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, near Burford, Oxfordshire, England. The red panda (also known as the lesser panda or red cat-bear), is a small tree-dwelling mammal, native to the eastern Himalayas and south-western China. The population of red pandas in the wild has been estimated at less than 10,000. Sadly, the population continues to decline and is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and inbreeding depression. In common with its cousin, the great panda, the red's diet is primarily bamboo, but they have also been known to eat blossom, berries, small mammals, eggs and even birds. Date: 17th February 2015.

King Edward II, Didcot, August 2021 Resplendent in its blue British Railways livery, King class locomotive number 6023, King Edward II was built in Swindon in 1930, and spent most of its working life hauling passenger trains between London Paddington and Devon. The 'Kings' were the most powerful locomotives to work the Great Western Railway routes. Sold for scrap in 1962, KIng Edward II then spent over 20 years in a South Wales scrapyard, before eventually ending up at Didcot Railway Centre, in Oxfordshire, where it was rebuilt in a major engineering project taking a further 20 years. The locomotive was regularly run at Didcot between 2011 and 2020, also visiting other heritage railways in the Midlands, Yorkshire, and Devon. The locomoti...

Dorchester Abbey Number of views as of 26th March 2016 = 1100. The Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul, Dorchester, South Oxfordshire, England. Situated 9 miles south east of Oxford and less than a mile from the River Thames, Dorchester is a small village of just over 1000 inhabitants, with a great Abbey and was once an important Roman town. The Abbey you see today was begun in the 12th century and is essentially Norman in construction, though the building replaced two earlier Saxon cathedrals and there is evidence of Christian activity in and around Dorchester dating back to the 7th century. All Souls College, Oxford Number of views as of 14th February 2019 = 1140. The College of All Souls of the Faithful Departed (Oxford, England) was founded in 1438 by Henry VI and Henry Chichele (a fellow of New College and Archbishop of Canterbury). Today the College is primarily an academic research institution with particular strengths in the Humanities and Social and Theoretical Sciences and an outstanding library. Although its fellows are involved in teaching and supervision of research, the college has no undergraduates. Date: 30th October 2010. Two Tanks, Didcot, August 2021 Two 'Great Western' tank engines on display at the Didcot Railway Centre (Oxfordshire, England), On the left is an 0-4-0 ST (Saddle Tank) loco, number 1338, built for the Cardiff railway in 1898. On the right is a 2-6-2T engine, number 5572, built at Swindon works in 1929. Just visible in the shed to the rear is GWR diesel railcar, number 22. These were introduced in the 1930s and were the forerunner to more modern diesel multiple units (DMUs). Date: 15th August 2021.

Your Carriage Awaits M'Lady Number of views as of 17th October 2018 = 140. A rather fine, yellow and black, horse-drawn, covered carriage waiting for passengers outside a certain stately residence in Oxfordshire, England.
