Lascaux cave paintings. These paintings are on the walls of the Lascaux caves in Dordogne, south- western France. There are several halls; this is the Great Hall of the Bulls, which contains a 20- metre-long fresco of bulls, stags and horses. The caves contain some of the earliest known artwork, dating from around 17,000 years ago. They were painted by Cro-Magnon man, an ancestor of modern humans that lived in Europe.

Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon skulls. The Neanderthal skull (left) was found at La Ferrassie, France, in 1909, and is thought to be around 70,000 years old. The other skull is Cro-Magnon 1, found as Les Eyzies, France, in 1868, and dated to 30,000 years ago. Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons cohabited in Europe between about 40,000 and 30-25,000 years ago, when the former died out. Neanderthals had occupied the region from as far back as 350,000 years ago. Cro-Magnons were anatomically similar to modern humans, and are their ancestors. It is not known for sure what caused the extinction of the Neanderthals, but competition with the advanced Cro-Magnons is unlikely to have helped their cause.

(23-17 million years ago) is depicted hypothetically as an African ape with both primitive and advanced features. To its right is Australopithecus afarensis (>4-2.5 Myr BP), which walked upright on two legs. Homo habilis (2- 1.6 Myr BP) was truly human ("Homo"), resembling A. afarensis but also using stone tools. About 1.8 Myr BP, H. erectus appeared in Africa, using fire and wooden tools. H. erectus is thought to have migrated from Africa into Eurasia. H. neanderthalensis (150,000 years BP) was closely related to modern humans, H. sapiens (right).

The word “Dinosaur” comes from the Greek “Deinos” meaning “Terrible” and “Sauros” meaning “Lizard”. These Dinosaurs don’t like being called “terrible”, so they are holding a protest because they think they are, “Actually quite nice”. Text: “We’re not “terrible Lizards”. “We’re actually quite nice!”

Trail of hominid footprints fossilized in volcanic ash. This 70 metre trail was found by Mary Leakey's expedition at Laetoli, Tanzania in 1978. It dates from 3.6 million years & shows that hominids had acquired the upright, bipedal, free- striding gait of modern man by this date. The trail probably belongs to Australopithecus afarensis & dates from 3.7 to 3.0 million years ago. The footprints show a well developed arch to the foot & no divergence of the big toe. They are of two adults with possibly a third set belonging to a child who walked in the footsteps of one of the adults.
