Portsmouth Magnets

The professional American football team now known as the Detroit Lions previously played in Portsmouth, Ohio from its founding in 1928 to its relocation to Detroit in 1934. This article chronicles the team's history during their time as the Portsmouth Spartans. Originally drawing players from defunct independent professional and semi-pro teams, they joined the fledgling National Football League in 1930. Their home stadium was Universal Stadium (known today as Spartan Municipal Stadium).

Back in February, before everything went crazy I visited Portchester castle in Hampshire. It was a cold grey day with oppressive dark clouds threatening rain. But across Portsmouth harbour, the city of Portsmouth, along with Gosport, and the two new aircraft carriers made an interesting skyline in a window of light. I painted this version in oil on a 16x12 inch board based on the photos I took that day. I've used a limited palette of cobalt blue, vandyke brown, naples yellow and sap green, plus titanium white.

I thought it about time I painted a view of Portsmouth (Hampshire, UK), so I was delighted to find this unusual angle where the Spinnaker Tower looks like a little model sitting atop a chimney. The view is from the city walls, above the artist's shops of the arches. Painted in oil on a 12x10 inch board.

Sailing out of Portsmouth Harbour and passing the Royal Naval Dockyard where a Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker is moored. Portsmouth has been an important harbour for years - an ideal place for warships from Medieval times. The first Royal Navy was formed by Henry VIII although the first properly organised RN was started by Charles II in the late 1600s when he inherited a large fleet! However, Portsmouth is also an important Merchant Navy port and ferry terminal with many cruises starting here.

Prescott Park Flower Gardens in Portsmouth NH is my favorite place to go to gather inspiration for painting this special oasis in Portsmouth. It is a popular wedding venue in New Hampshire.

A sailing barge heading into Portsmouth Harbour. The image was captured from the Southsea end of Portsmouth, looking out on to Spithead. In the background are the hills of the Isle of Wight with yachts and a car ferry. These barges are more commonly seen in the Thames estuary and East Anglia area where they were once the local freight carriers.
