The Artemis program is a US government-funded human spaceflight program that has the goal of landing "the first woman and the next man" on the Moon, specifically at the lunar south pole region by 2024. The program is carried out predominantly by NASA, U.S. commercial spaceflight companies contracted by NASA, and international partners. NASA is leading the program, but expects international partnerships to play a key role in advancing Artemis as the next step towards the long-term goal of establishing a sustainable presence on the Moon, laying the foundation for private companies to build a lunar economy, and eventually sending humans to Mars.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, of the Apollo 11 lunar mission, carrying out maintenance work on lunar module Eagle, 21st July 1969. Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were the first humans to walk on the moon. The landing was televised and viewed by over 530 million people worldwide. The mission was launched on the 16th of July 1969 and landed on the Moon on the 20th of July. The crew splashed down in the Pacific ocean on the 24th of July.

LRO and LCROSS mission launch. Atlas V/Centaur carrying NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) on their missions to the moon. Lift-off took place from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA, on 18 June 2009. The LRO will stay in lunar orbit for at least one Earth year, mapping the surface, surveying resources and identifying possible landing sites for manned missions. The LRO/LCROSS mission entered lunar orbit on 23rd June 2009. The LRO also carried a secondary payload, the LCROSS instrument. This carried out an impact experiment on 9 October 2009, successfully detecting water in a permanently shadowed crater at the Moon's South Pole.

Chang'e 5 (Chinese: 嫦娥五号; pinyin: Cháng'é wǔhào) is an ongoing robotic Chinese lunar exploration mission consisting of a service module, lunar lander, ascender, and a sample-return vehicle. It was launched on November 23, 2020 20:30 UTC and is expected to land on the moon sometime after November 27, and return to Earth around December 16–17.[5][6] Chang'e 5 will be China's first sample return mission, aiming to return at least 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of lunar soil and rock samples back to the Earth.[3] Like its predecessors, the spacecraft is named after the Chinese Moon goddess, Chang'e.
