Corfe Castle is one of the most scenic spots in Southerm England. The ruin occupies a mound at the one significant gap in the Purbeck Hills that isolated the 'isle' of Purbeck from the rest of Dorset (UK). So it is no surprise that it was built as early as the time of William the Conqueror (11th century). And it is also no surprise that it was demolished by Oliver Cromwell (1646) to stop it becoming a stronghold. Today it stands as a romantic ruin over the picturesque village of Corfe - a place that feels trapped in an Enid Blyton novel, with its old fashioned village feel, complete with preserved steam railway. There are many good angles to view the castle. As well as from the common (here), the hills either side are good vantage point...

ON the show CASTLE, when Alexis sees her father in his Halloween costume and wonders what he's supposed to be, Castle replies: “space cowboy."

I had difficulty in deciding which view of Conwy (North Wales, UK) to paint. The obvious choice would include the imposing castle and maybe the historic suspension bridge. For this 16x12 inch oil painting though I opted for a view of the town and walls from across the estuary, seen by the low light of early evening - which gave it a nice warm glow.

All the songs make sense.

Season 5

This view of Dunster in Somerset, comes from a trip I did some years ago exploring Exmoor in a couple of days. It was a hot summer's day, and the yarn market (structure on right, where centuries ago there was a market) provided welcome shelter from the heat. But it was more than that, for I stepped inside and felt like I had gone back in time, but could look out onto the then 20th century outside. Its strange how old wooden buildings can sometimes give that feeling. Painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board

There are many lovely views of Arundel, but one of my favourites is from the river near the station. The river is tidal at this point, so the brackish water is always a bit murky. There is a ice walk you can do from here heading upstream to the next road crossing (near Amberley), through the woods, and down into the town from the grounds around the castle. I've painted this view in oil on a 24x12 inch board based on photos I took on that walk.

When leaving the train at Harlech (Wales) you find yourself at the foot of the castle. There is a gate, but its exit only, and the way in is up the hill and from the town. If that all sounds too much effort, then an alternative is to stroll across the sand dunes, where the sea used to be, and perhaps see the castle nestled in the landscape. And that is exactly what I've done here in this little oil painting!
