The Royals originated in Rochester, New York, as the Rochester Seagrams (a semi-professional team) in 1923 and joined the National Basketball League in 1945 as the Rochester Royals.[1] They jumped to the Basketball Association of America, forerunner of the NBA, in 1948. As the Royals, the team was often successful on the court, winning the NBA championship in 1951. The team, however, found it increasingly difficult to turn a profit in the comparatively small market of Rochester and relocated to Cincinnati in 1957, becoming the Cincinnati Royals.

The Rochester Monarchs were a U.S. Junior A hockey team based in Rochester, NY playing in the New York-Penn Major Hockey League from 1973 to 1979. The team played in the Lakeshore Leisure Rinks. The name has since been used for several other junior league teams.

The Rochester Lancers were a soccer team based in Rochester, New York that played in the American Soccer League from 1967 until 1969 and the North American Soccer League from 1970 to 1980. The name was also used by a team in the MISL and MASL from 2011-2015, and is now being used by a team in the NPSL.
