“The Organ Pipes” Canyon. Hexagonal joints in a post Karoo dolerite, which solidified into a group of homogeneously oriented columns with mostly hexagonal cross sections, form a small canyon in the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei, Namibia, Africa.

Looking down from the rim of the canyon the Tsauchab River flows though the Sesriem Canyon, but it is usually as dry as in this image. At the entry to Sossusvlei is the Sesriem Canyon. As a result of erosion over many centuries, a narrow gorge of about one kilometre in length was formed about 30 to 40 metres deep. Sossusvlei, Namib Desert, Namibia, Africa.

It's a hike to get there, but SO worth it. It's like standing on another planet as the sun rises and the shadows and colours change constantly. Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Also written DeadVlei or Dead Vlei, its name means "dead marsh" (from English dead, and Afrikaans vlei, a lake or marsh in a valley between the dunes). The pan also is referred to as "Dooie Vlei" which is the (presumably original) fully Afrikaans name.

The Dead Vlei features on many photographers' bucket list. Most photos there show the brilliant blue skies and orange sand dunes. Whilst I have also made such photos, I wanted to also capture the isolation and stark nature of that environment.
