The Tudor dynasty oversaw a transformative period of English history, with monarchs including Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. This era was marked by religious and political upheaval, including the English Reformation and the establishment of the Church of England. Henry VIII's six marriages and his break from the Catholic Church are particularly well-known. Elizabeth I's reign saw the defeat of the Spanish Armada and a flowering of English culture, with playwrights such as Shakespeare producing some of their greatest works. For this block print I have based my design of Tudor style embroidery. Many of the Tudors clothes were embroidered with sweeping vines and floral patterns. Here you can see a small bird perched among a flowering vine. Done in black and white it also reminds me a lot of Tudor style blackwork. I've recreated this bird motif as a hand-carved block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.

This original design was created in Illustrator using different historical sources. It's a red Tudor rose, a combination of the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York. The Tudor rose is the traditional floral heraldic emblem of England.

These medieval animals were extracted from the Bodleian MS. Ashmole 1504 'The Tudor Pattern Book' and cleaned. The book is part-bestiary, part-herbal and an important visual record of early cultivated plants.
