Victor Harbor Magnets

I got up early on Friday morning during my recent trip to South Australia. I was staying in Goolwa, only a couple of minutes drive from Victor Harbor, so I headed down there for some dawn photography.. very pleased with the results.

View from Granite Island no2 is my second 'View from Granite Island' oil painting. I took the reference photo while going for a walk around Granite Island, a small island off Victor Harbor, South Australia. In the painting I wanted to capture the beautiful view including its unique granite rocks and the vast ocean continuing into the horizon.

It's hard to miss the Bluff when you arrive in Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. It's very prominent and can be seen from all over the area. The Bluff is also a famous geological landmark. The headland is granite that came from deep in the earth's crust about 500 million years ago. The boulders that sit on top of the Bluff were carried there by ice and the smooth shape of the Bluff's profile was also caused by ice erosion. This scene was once painted by Hans Heysen. Avril Thomas tried to get into the very spot where he may have sat to paint the picture.For two weeks in August 1925, after the death of their third daughter, Heysen and his family visited the resort town of Victor Harbor, on the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide. Here, he painted the watercolour Petrel Cove. Sitting on the grass of the saddle of The Bluff at Rosetta Head Heysen painted this winter landscape looking south-west across Petrel Cove towards King Head and Newland Head. South Australia - south of Adelaide from the hills to the sea, between Gulf St. Vincent and the Southern Ocean. A day trip from Adelaide Towns on the peninsula include Mclaren Vale, Willunga Victor Harbor, Normanville, Yankalilla and Rapid Bay. Districts include Inman Valley and Hindmarsh Valley. A ferry travels between Cape Jervis, at the tip of the peninsula to Kangaroo Island. There is surfing on both the west and south facing coasts - known locally to Adelaide surfers as the Mid South Coast and the Far South Coast.
